Image Management and Public Officials
Political Image Consulting: A Famous Case StudyThe 1960 Kennedy-Nixon debate dramatized the impact that visual appearance and communications style can have on public influence and subsequently on election results. The photogenic appeal of John F. Kennedy versus the poorly-groomed Richard Nixon determined the Presidential election. When the debate ended, a large majority of television viewers recognized Kennedy as the winner. But, most radio listeners thought that Nixon had done as well as, if not better than Kennedy. Kennedy won the popular vote 49.7% to 49.5%. This close finish demonstrated the immeasurable power of image and presence.
